
Powerboat Courses
Courses are run aboard our custom-designed Ribcraft 6.2m/175 hp RIB 'Tiger' or Humber 6.3/150 hp RIB 'Tigger', both in Cardiff Bay and in the Bristol Channel. 'Tiger' and 'Tigger' are equipped with a full compliment of safety equipment and state of the art digital chart plotters with depth sounder.
TBT provides powerboat training for numerous organisations and government agencies including: Cardiff Harbour Authority, The Environment Agency, Countryside Council for Wales, Quay Marinas LTD, HM Armed Forces etc. Our courses are run by a small team of Advanced Instructors who ensure that you are taking part in some of the best powerboat training available in the UK.

RYA National Powerboat Certificate (Level II)
- a 2 day practical course taking you through a full range of skills including: launch and recovery, low and high speed manoeuvres, berthing, anchoring, IRPCS, basic navigation, man-overboard and lots more. After completing this course you should be confident (and competent) to take your own powerboat to sea during daylight hours. Successful completion of the RYA Level II course also entitles you to the International Certificate of Competence needed to legally drive powerboats abroad. We now issue the new plastic 'Driving License' style qualification cards which replace the old paper certificates and require a passport size photograph. £269 per person

New Platinum Powerboat Level II Course

- as above but on a one-to-one basis at a very special price of only £399.
Powerboating for Ladies - a 1 day ladies only practical course geared towards getting hands-on and building confidence with the emphasis on stress-free powerboating. Candidates will qualify for the RYA Powerboat Level 1 award. £139 per person.
RYA Day Cruising (Intermediate) Powerboat

- a 2 day practical course for holders of the RYA Level II qualification who would like to raise their skills to a level where they can plan and execute more ambitious passages. During this course passage planning and pilotage skills such as plotting a course to steer and putting together a pilotage plan are covered thoroughly ashore then practiced for real at a variety of destinations in the Bristol Channel. This course is particularly popular on an 'own boat' basis and covers both traditional and electronic navigation methods. £279 per person.
RYA Advanced Powerboat

- a 2 day practical course taking the experienced powerboat handler through the skills needed to safely pilot a performance powerboat in more testing conditions and at night. This advanced-level qualification covers advanced navigation (including at night), advanced boat handling, powerboat handling in waves, searching sea areas and helicopter rescue. In addition to holding the RYA Level II certificate and several years experience, candidates should have a thorough theoretical knowledge to the level of Day Skipper prior to attending the this course. £299 per person.
RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat (Commercial) - an advanced examination based qualification for the professional powerboat handler.
Tiger Bay Training provides an expert service to candidates looking to attain this benchmark qualification including: personal assessment, pre-examination testing/training and arranging examination.

RYA Powerboat Instructor Development Course - develop your skills as an RYA Powerboat Instructor with one of the best powerboat centres in the country.
Our three month Instructor Development course includes RYA Powerboat Level II, VHF/DSC Radio and RYA First Aid qualifications plus your RYA Instructor's course (on a residential basis, usually at Plas Menai, National Watersports Centre for Wales).
But what makes our program unique is the opportunity to train with, shadow and work with Chief Instructor Alan Elworthy over a period of up to three months prior to your instructor course. We believe that this 'mentoring approach' not only gives the candidate the very best opportunity of passing their instructor course but also equips the new instructor with a skill-set that is unsurpassed in the watersports industry.

Fast-track Commercial Skipper Course - a unique 6-8 week intensive course designed to qualify the candidate to the level of RYA/MCA Advanced Powerboat (Commercial). The full package.
You will be training for 3 days a week, often on a one to one basis with our expert team. Our purpose in this course is to give the candidate all the skills, knowledge and sea-time needed to realise their goal of becoming a commercial skipper qualified to operate craft of up to 24m in length, day and night up to 20 miles from a safe haven.
The course includes: RYA Powerboat Level II, RYA Powerboat Intermediate, RYA Day Skipper Theory, VHF/DSC Radio, Sea Survival, RYA First Aid, LL5 Doctor's Medical, RYA Advanced Powerboat, RYA Advanced Powerboat Commercial Examination and all necessary sea time. Total cost £4500.
